Compares the target searches of your pages, the kind of page each one is, and how much they overlap.
For the best results
- Check one topic at a time, such as your plumbing pages or your SEO service pages. A whole site at once mixes unrelated pages and buries the real overlaps.
- Put 10 to 50 pages in a run: the pages you think target the same searches, plus their close neighbors.
- Add clicks from Search Console as the fourth column. With clicks, the checker keeps the page Google already prefers; without them it keeps the broader page.
- Use each page's real main search as its keyword (the top query for that page in Search Console), not the keyword you hoped it would rank for.
- Leave out searches for your own brand name. Every page ranks for those, so they show overlap that isn't a problem.
- In the free app, connect Search Console instead: it fills in each page's main search and clicks, and lists the real searches where two of your pages show up.
Mistakes to avoid
- Pasting every page on the site in one go.
- Merging two pages just because they share a word: check the reason under each group first.
- Redirecting before moving the useful content from the page you retire.
A good input: one topic, real main searches, clicks

What keyword cannibalization is, and when it actually hurts
Keyword cannibalization happens when two or more of your pages go after the same search with the same intent. Google usually shows one page per site for a search, so it keeps swapping them, and neither ranks as well as one strong page would. The signs: rankings that jump around, the "wrong" page showing up and traffic split across near-duplicates.
How the checker decides
List your pages with the keyword each one targets. The checker compares only the meaningful words in each keyword. Words every page shares (like your main topic) count for less. Small modifiers ("services," a city, a year) barely count. Pages that serve different needs, like a how-to guide and a service page, score half, because they compete much less. A page only joins a group when it resembles every page in it, so one shared word can't lump unrelated pages together.
A clear fix for every group
- Merge: same target and same intent. Keep the stronger page (the one with more clicks, if you add them), move the useful content over and 301-redirect the other. The redirect line is written for you.
- Broad vs. specific: a hub page and a sub-page. Keep both, lead the sub-page with what makes it specific and link them with the right anchor text.
- Different jobs: a guide and a service page. Make one teach and the other sell, and link the guide to the service page.
In the free app, you can connect Search Console. The checker then also lists every real search where Google shows 2 of your pages, which shows the overlap is costing you clicks.
How to use this tool
- 1List pages and keywords
One per line: "/url/ | keyword", or paste columns from a spreadsheet (URL, keyword, title, clicks). Start with one topic.
- 2Or load from Search Console
In the free app, connect Search Console: each page's main search and its clicks fill in automatically, plus the real overlapping searches.
- 3Read each group
"Why this was flagged" explains the overlap, and the steps say exactly what to do, with the redirect code when pages should be merged.
- 4Fix and confirm
Merge, separate or re-link the pages, then watch the search in Search Console for 4 to 6 weeks.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find cannibalization in Search Console?
In Performance, click a search, then open the Pages tab. Several pages with impressions for the same search, with positions that swap from week to week, is the classic sign. Connecting Search Console in the app does this for every search at once.
Should I always merge competing pages?
No. Merge when both pages serve the same intent. If one teaches and the other sells, keep both and make each page's job obvious.
Will a 301 redirect lose rankings?
A redirect to a closely matching page usually passes on its signals. Move the best content from both pages into the one you keep.
Why add clicks?
With clicks, the checker keeps the page Google already prefers. Without them, it keeps the broader page.
Is it free?
Yes. The first 3 groups show right away. Every group and what to do with each one are free when you sign in with your email. Loading from Search Console is free in the app.
